Google Maps on Android smartphones may soon look a little different. Some users have already reported that the app has undergone some visual changes.
Thankfully, the redesign doesn’t drastically change how Google Maps functions, but the layout changes should make navigating the app a little easier.
The biggest difference is that the menus that allow you to see more detailed information about a location, or to see travel options about how to get between two points, don’t fill the screen when you open them. Instead, a portion of the map will always remain visible at the top of the screen.
Also, the menu appears to be placed on the map rather than on a separate screen. At the top of the menu, you’ll see a bar that lets you know you can minimize the menu by swiping down, and an X button to tap to close it completely.
You could return to the map by swiping down or tapping the back arrow at the top of the old menu style, but this visual redesign makes this more obvious, and closing the menu completely is also a little easier. It gets easier.
Another slight change is that the route menu now lists the various transportation options at the bottom of the screen in most cases. These options only move to the top of the screen when you fully open the menu.
Previously, the options were at the top of the screen. Lowering them to the bottom makes it easier to start navigating with just one hand.
These changes will be coming to the Google Maps app soon if they aren’t already. As reported by 9to5Google, some users have already seen the changes to the app, but it may take some time for the changes to reach everyone. You can also check the Play Store to see if you can install updates manually.
It is expected that this change may also be applied to the iOS version of Google Maps, but we will have to wait for it to be applied to a wider range of users.
