MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — This spring, a local robotics team will take its talents to the world as it heads to Houston to compete in the 2024 FIRST Championship.
The Smithtown BeeBots are a Monongalia County-based youth robotics team made up of five home-schooled students between the ages of 5 and 10. The team earned a spot in the tournament by winning West Virginia’s first ever Lego League tournament at Fairmont State. The university will be retroactive to December 2023.
The FIRST Championship is a global tournament where winners of selected regional robot leagues come together to compete, according to the event website. The championship will feature teams from three feeder tournaments, including FIRST LEGO League, FIRST Tech Challenge, and FIRST Robotics Competition.
To help the Smithtown Beebots obtain the funds they need for their trip, the team is planning a variety of fundraisers, including creating bee boxes to be raffled off and sold to local beekeepers.
