A Baltimore man was sentenced years after he was accused of targeting multiple Asian American businesses with violence and attempting to kill two of their owners.
The Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office announced in a news release Wednesday that Darryl Doles, who pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder, hate crime and second-degree assault, was sentenced to life in prison, with 30 years suspended. .

Doles began the series of attacks after being refused entry to Linden Discount Liquors for refusing to wear a mask and comply with the store’s COVID-19 restrictions, according to the release. When store security asked him to leave, Doles threw the lottery machine to the ground and left, but returned claiming he had left behind his personal items, according to the release. A few minutes later, Doles entered 40/40 Liquors, kicked a store window and knocked over a wine bottle before leaving, according to the release. When his owner ordered him never to return, Dolls responded by shouting anti-Asian slurs.
Shortly afterward, Doles entered a third Asian-owned liquor store, Wonderland Liquors, and caused a disturbance by knocking over merchandise, according to the release. Authorities were alerted and Doles left the store for a while, but returned when the owner began locking the store.

When the owner’s sister tried to stop Dolls, she was also hit in the head, the statement said.
“Although injured, the owner ran to help his sister and removed Dolls’ mask. Dolls then repeatedly hit both women in the head with a cement block,” the release states.
The sisters were eventually able to wrest Brock from him, remove him from the store, and call 911 again before Baltimore police officers arrived. The owner’s son helped search for Dolls, who was taken into police custody.
According to the statement, Doles allegedly said things like “They need to go back to their country” during a conversation with a person who identified himself as “Sean.”
Dolls will be held at Baltimore Central Booking and Intake.
