The NBA world doesn’t know what to do when the Knicks are making competent moves.
After years of bad signings and trades led by unlucky executives, the Knicks are suddenly being praised for the decisions of their front office, led by team president Leon Rose.
The trend continues ahead of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, with the Knicks acquiring Alec Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic from the Pistons, along with Quentin Grimes, Evan Fournier, Malachi Flynn, Ryan Arcidiacono, and the future They acquired two first-round picks.
Burks and Bogdanovic give the Knicks two more scoring threats, and they only lose one rotation player in Grimes, who has openly complained about his reduced role.
“The Knicks are the big winners. They need more scoring, and Bogdanovic and Burks were a perfect fit next to Engine (Jalen) Brunson and (Julius) Randle. Both can get hot.” Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer wrote about X. “We can create both if we want to, to give Branson some breathing room. New York is really deep right now.”
“The Knicks have been modest and pretty sharp lately. They’ve had a lot of really great pickups recently. They got Hart, DDV (Donte DiVincenzo), (Isaiah) Hartenstein + Bojan. They’ve done a really great job quietly rebuilding. He did that for me.” Former Mavericks executive Halalavos Volgaris wrote about X.
“The only thing the Knicks lacked was depth, and right now they’re deeper than the Pacific Ocean,” ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins said on the network’s Trade Deadline show.
Track Knicks trades before the deadline
- The Knicks are set to acquire Alec Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic from the Pistons ahead of Thursday’s 2024 NBA trade deadline, according to multiple reports.
- Quentin Grimes, Evan Fournier, Malachi Flynn, Ryan Arcidiacono and two future second-round picks are part of the package headed to Detroit, ESPN.com reported.
- Burks, who played for the Knicks in 2020-21 and 2021-22, is averaging 12.6 points per game this season.
- Bogdanovic averaged 20.2 points per game with Detroit and has long been rumored to be on the trade market.
- Fournier has been unhappy with being benched for much of the season, going so far as to say the Knicks are holding him “hostage.” He previously expected him to be traded before the season started.
- Grimes lost his starting spot to Donte DiVincenzo in early December and has suffered a demotion.

The Pistons are receiving a different kind of reaction.
“I don’t know if Detroit should be allowed to make trades, sign free agents, hire coaches, etc.” Bill Simmons wrote about X.
The move cements the 33-18 Knicks as a legitimate title contender and could help in the short term as a response to injuries to Brunson, Randle and OG Anunoby.
The acquisition of Anunoby on December 30th for Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett was a great success in New York.
Anunoby’s solid defense and spot-up shooting made him a perfect fit alongside Randle and Brunson, two stars who often dominate the ball on offense.
The Knicks are 16-3 since the trade and are tied with the Bucks for third place in the Eastern Conference, one game behind the Cavaliers.
However, Anunoby is currently sidelined with bone spurs in his elbow.
