“The Simpsons” seems to be predicting a new cultural moment, with social media users puzzling over the devices depicted in a 2016 episode of the Fox series and Apple’s recently released spatial computer, the Apple Vision Pro. points out the similarities.
In an episode called “Friends and Family,” residents of the fictional city of Springfield are seen using a device that looks eerily similar to the Vision Pro. This device causes chaos in the city as the characters lose their sense of space and run into telephone poles and fall into manholes.
The show has been called clairvoyant by some, but showrunners have repeatedly stated that the “predictions” the show has made are coincidental.
“When people say that ‘The Simpsons’ is predicting something, I generally say: we’re just satirizing real-life events from years ago, and history repeats itself.” It just looks like we are predicting something because we keep going,” said the former. Showrunner Bill Oakley said in a 2020 interview with Reuters:
Previous ‘Simpsons’ predictions
The Apple Vision Pro phenomenon isn’t the first time The Simpsons has been used to predict events behind the screen.
In the 1993 episode “$pringfield (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling),” Roy Horn is mauled by a white Bengal tiger during a Siegfried and Roy show. I predicted it almost 10 years before it happened. In the 1998 episode “The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace”, Homer estimates the mass of the Higgs particle 14 years before it was discovered.
And in the 1994 episode “Lisa on Ice,” Nelson attempts to set Newton, the ancestor of the iPhone, a reminder to “hit Martin.” The device instead returns a reminder: “Eat Martha,” a phrase that could influence Apple’s keyboard development.
“If you hear people talking and they use the phrase ‘eat Martha,’ they’re basically referring to the fact that they need to be glued to their keyboards. We needed to make sure text input would work in this case, otherwise we’d have a problem here.”Eat Martha,” said Nitin Ganatra, former director of iOS application engineering at Apple. he told Fast Company in 2013.
While there are similarities between the show and real-world events, others extend the show’s predictive abilities.

What is Apple Vision Pro?
The mixed reality headset was first announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June and released on Friday. The company says Vision Pro allows users to immerse themselves in the company’s visionOS operating system, with support for spatial Facetime videos, photos and apps.
The device is controlled using eye and hand movements, as well as voice commands.
