Little was known about what that capture button did, but its name suggested it had something to do with photography and videography. Now, a new report appears to shed more light on the situation.
The report was reported via posts by MacRumors and the Instant Digital account on Chinese social network Weibo. According to the report, the main use of the capture button is to capture photos and videos, as you’d expect, but there’s a particularly interesting twist that’s worth noting.

According to Instant Digital, the pressure-sensitive capture button lets you press lightly to begin setting focus, then press further to fully release the shutter in the camera app. It’s a feature that closely mimics the behavior of a real digital camera’s shutter button, and it’s thought that this movement will become part of a broader focus on photography across iPhone.
Apple isn’t expected to announce new iPhones until September this year, and Apple’s plans may change in the meantime. MacRumors says this information is important to take with a grain of salt, as Instant Digital accounts have a mixed track record with this kind of thing. However, the existence of the Capture Button has now been reported by multiple news outlets, so it seems very likely that it’s something Apple is testing. However, whether it ships or not is another matter entirely.
