WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden on Monday called the impeachment of Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas an “unprecedented” move that betrays the real challenge of securing the U.S. southern border, according to a policy statement first shared with NBC News. He announced that he plans to denounce the attack as a “political attack that violates the Constitution.” .

Mr. Biden’s statement is the strongest condemnation of the Republican-controlled House of Representatives’ efforts to bring Mr. Mayorkas’ impeachment to the floor.

The House is scheduled to vote on the impeachment resolution on Tuesday, a Republican leadership aide said. The House Rules Committee is scheduled to meet Monday afternoon to advance the measure.

“From his time at the Department of Justice as a federal prosecutor, to his time as deputy attorney general, and now as secretary of homeland security, he has remained faithful to the rule of law and committed to the values that make this country great,” Biden said. “We have shown deep commitment.” I would say “The impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas is an unprecedented act of unconstitutional political retribution and will do nothing to solve the challenges our nation faces in border security.”

Republicans say the House Homeland Security Committee, under Representative Majorikas, whom Mr. They argue that impeachment hearings, which began last month, are necessary. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., tried twice last year to force an impeachment vote against Mayorkas.

In a format typically taken by presidents to announce when they will veto a particular bill, Mr. They argue that they are targeting employees.

“The impeachment power was never intended as a tool for members of the opposing party to harass executive branch officials over policy debates,” Biden said. “Impeaching Secretary Mayorkas would trivialize this solemn constitutional power and invite further partisan abuse of it in the future.”

Recommendation

Biden called the impeachment charges “baseless” and said his administration would continue to work with Congress to find solutions to secure the border and strengthen the immigration system, which is strained by record numbers of people entering the country. Ta. Hardline Republicans have balked at the newly announced border bill, sparking a backlash from some of their colleagues who are eager to pass legislation to address the crisis.

Some Republicans have countered that Mr. Mayorkas’ background does not meet the standards for treason, high crimes and misdemeanors required by impeachment as described by the framers. Mayorklas becomes the second Cabinet secretary in U.S. history to be impeached.

The White House earlier compared the push to remove Mayorkas to efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and impeach Biden, in a memo accusing Republicans of “extreme far-right politics” and calling it a constitutional He argued against impeachment for several reasons.
