After months of preparation, more than 100 students competed in the fast-paced annual academic competition hosted by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
On Saturday, February 3, for the second year in a row, the Irvine College High School team won the regional competition at the National Science Bowl, hosted by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.
More than 100 students from 21 schools in Los Angeles and Orange counties participated in JPL’s 32nd annual Academic Challenge. Troy High School in Fullerton took his second place and Arcadia High School took his third place.
University high school teams have won this event several times in recent years. The school also won first place at this year’s Regional Marine Science Bowl, hosted by JPL last month.
The National Science Bowl competition allows students to answer multiple-choice questions in just seconds on topics such as biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, energy, and mathematics. Each team is made up of her four students and her one alternate, and is coached by the teacher.
Student teams spend months preparing, researching and practicing techniques with the bowl’s “Jeopardy!”-style buzzer. Dozens of JPL volunteers will help ensure the contest runs smoothly. It all comes down to an incredibly intense event.
“There’s so much energy and it’s thrilling to watch,” said Kim Liebense, manager of JPL’s Department of Public Service, which has been coordinating the lab’s competition since 1993. It’s also for volunteers who “love seeing the focus and dedication of our students and how rewarding it is.” ”
University High Schools are now eligible to compete against winners of dozens of other regional competitions across the country in the national finals tournament to be held April 25-29 in Washington.
The National Science Bowl, run by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, is one of the nation’s largest academic science competitions. Since the competition began in 1991, more than 344,000 students have participated.
