There was a moment after the AFC Championship game when my world turned upside down. At that moment, I believed in love again. When Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey kissed.
That kiss was so real. The way couples kiss when they know they have a future with each other. It wasn’t PR or a fake. It wasn’t cooked in a lab by an agent. At that moment, they both looked really happy. I can’t believe I’m analyzing kissing like I was a teenager reading Tiger Beat with Justin Bieber on the cover, but here it is. They looked like a totally, totally, wonderfully legit couple.
They seemed to be in love…wait…wait…wait?
Some Swifties might say, “Welcome to the party, idiot.” Where were you? Do you know where I went? Swift is a Pentagon psychic who saw this cynical, cruel world we live in where people think a man who has been indicted 812 times is still a viable presidential candidate. Is there a? That irony prompted a headline in October, when reports of their relationship became more public: “Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey’s romance is fake. You know it. So what? Let’s have fun.” I decided to write a column.

To be fair, there were parts of it that were a joke, but there was definitely a serious element to it. We’ve all been fooled by celebrity fake romances, and this felt like one, at least in part. What is clear is that as time goes on and they are seen more and more in public, it becomes less and less fake. He had one signal that I ignored. That was probably the biggest instruction in the early stages. That’s what Kelsey’s brother Jason said in a radio interview when he was asked about their budding relationship.
“It’s hard to answer because I don’t know what’s going on in Travis’ love life. I try to make his job my job and stay out of that world. But with that said, I think they’re doing well and I think that’s all 100% true and I hope this thing works out.”
Later in the interview, Jason tried to say he was joking, but of course we know he wasn’t.
Another big clue that the relationship was real came on the Kelce brothers’ podcast “New Heights” after Swift attended his first Kansas City game in September.
“Big shout out to Taylor for pulling me up,” Travis said. “That was pretty (brave). I thought it was amazing that everyone in the suite had nothing but great things to say about her, her friends, and her family.
