WATERTOWN — On Saturday, the Watertown Fairgrounds was the place for families to experience a day of fun at Snowtown USA.
“This is our second weekend, and today is Kids Day. We have a variety of exhibits and demonstrations, ice skating, face painting, and more,” said Snow Town USA Director David Daley.
Outside, a “Touch the Truck” activity allowed kids to try out ice flotation machines, also known as Zamboni, fire trucks, and public works vehicles. Representatives from the New York State Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office participated in a police dog demonstration for kindergarten through ninth grade students. WPBS had a bowling activity. Hot stews were provided so participants could keep warm while enjoying the outdoor activities. Face painting was held inside the arena where ice skating was held, and concession stands were also open.
Several artists participated in a snow carving contest and got heated near Saturday’s Kids Day activities. Snowtown USA has been named the state artist for this year’s snow carving competition.
“Teams submit their work before the contest so we can see it and review the description, and we build a 3D mold before we create the snow sculpture,” said Jamie Benner, Snowtown USA board member.・Mr. Clemmons said. “The rules and regulations are very specific. The judging is also very specific, with certain criteria in place. Part of the scoring is determined by how close the sculpture is to the original idea.”
The team includes exhibition participants, past state championships, national and international competition winners, and even Olympic participants.
The winners of this year’s Snowtown USA contest are Team 1, Joshua Howland, Summer Cowles, Derrick Howland, and Cody Everard, who created a sculpture titled “Sherman the Original Medicine Man.” Did. According to the team’s work description, “‘Shaman’ is a call to our ancestors and healers of human tribes. In the not-too-distant pandemic and fear of disease, we are the first healers and healers. We pay tribute to a man who was a great man.”
With this victory, the team will advance to the national tournament to be held in February 2025 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
