Former President Donald J. Trump falsely suggested in an interview aired on Fox News on Sunday that governments in Latin American countries were selecting unwanted citizens and transporting them to the U.S. border, making him the centerpiece of his 2016 presidential campaign. He reiterated his previous claim. motion.

He also accused the Chinese Communist Party of orchestrating illegal immigration to the United States, without providing any evidence, and said he believed China would try to interfere in the presidential election, calling President Xi Jinping ” He added that he liked it very much.

Asked by interviewer Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures” if he thought “military-age men” from China were “directed by the Communist Party to come here,” Trump replied, “Yes. I think so,” he replied.

“The leaders of these countries are smart. They’re not sending the people they love into this country. They’re sending caravans of people they don’t want, in most cases.”

The comment echoed one of the most incendiary lines from his first campaign announcement speech in 2015. “When Mexico sends its people, they are not doing their best,” he said at the time, adding: They are bringing crime. they are rapists. And I think there are some good people out there. ” He has also repeatedly falsely said that immigrants from Latin America come from “mental hospitals” and prisons.

Trump also spoke positively about the military-style mass deportations of Mexican immigrants under President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

“He was very strong on deportations because a lot of people are in our country illegally, and he started mass deportations on a massive scale,” Trump said. “He dropped them right near the border and they came back. Then he dropped them 3,000 miles away and they never came back.”

The mass deportations are part of an extreme escalation of anti-immigrant policies that Trump plans if he is re-elected.

The interview took place on the previous Thursday The military on Saturday attacked several strongholds in Yemen controlled by Houthi militants.

While much of the conversation focused on immigration and international issues, there was also discussion of domestic politics.

Bartiromo asked Trump about Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel, who had a rocky relationship with Trump. He indicated that he would like to see her replaced. “I think she did okay at the RNC initially,” he said. “At this point, I think there will probably be some changes made.”

He spoke as the party gathered in Las Vegas for its annual convention. The conversation centered around Trump’s control over the RNC and McDaniel’s future as party leader. Trump first nominated McDaniel for chair in 2016, and she served as a loyal mentor during the 2020 campaign and beyond. The two have communicated directly and frequently, even when their opinions differ. For example, Trump has refused to participate in the party’s major debates this term, and his team has publicly pressured the party to cancel future debates.

In a separate interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Mr. Trump’s last Republican primary opponent, Nikki Haley, repeated attacks she has made numerous times over the past two weeks, calling Mr. “They’re toying with it,” he accused. border. ” Trump is loudly trying to kill the bipartisan immigration and border security agreement in Congress.

“He told the Republicans not to do anything and told them to wait until the election because he doesn’t want to contribute to Biden’s victory and they shouldn’t get involved,” Haley said. We’re playing pretend,” he added. ”

She recanted previous statements that Texas had the right to secede, even though the Supreme Court ruled in 1869 that unilateral secession was unconstitutional.

The secession debate stems from a recent Supreme Court ruling that allowed the Biden administration to remove the concertina wire barrier that Texas installed along its southern border.

“Texas has been talking about secession for a long time,” Haley said. “The Constitution doesn’t allow that.” But she suggested the impulse was understandable because “people don’t expect the government to listen to them.”

Haley also appeared on “Saturday Night Live” and appeared in a skit as a “South Carolina voter” at CNN Trump’s town hall, asking why she refused to debate Haley.
