Ahead of the February 7 presidential election, crackdowns are intensifying in Azerbaijan, a former Soviet republic in the Caucasus bordering Iran and Armenia. Any opposition to President Ilham Aliyev will be silenced. Human rights activists, journalists, and political opponents face the regime’s wrath on a daily basis. Our reporters Karina Chabour and Romeo Langlois met victims of torture who denounced a system of violent repression. They also investigated the Council of Europe’s ambivalent relationship with the Baku regime.
In November 2023, several journalists and members of the management team of Abzas, an online investigative media specializing in human rights in Azerbaijan, were arrested by the country’s authorities. A few days later, Forbidden Stories, an international coalition of investigative journalists, announced that it would continue its work with Abzas.
As part of a consortium of French and international media organizations, RFI and FRANCE 24 continue to investigate imprisoned journalists for corruption by the Azerbaijani authorities. This work is published by more than a dozen partner media.
Forbidden Stories is an international network of journalists whose mission is to pursue investigations of murdered, threatened, and imprisoned journalists. Since its founding in 2017, more than 150 journalists and 60 news organizations have participated in collaborative investigations coordinated by Forbidden Stories, including the Raphael Project, Story Killers, and the Pegasus Project.
