A FedEx driver who dumped 400 packages worth about $40,000 into an Alabama ravine has pleaded guilty to theft, the Blount County Courthouse told USA Today.
DeAndre Rayshawn Charleston, 24, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree theft of property, a misdemeanor, according to Blount County Court.
Blount County Court confirmed Charleston was ordered to pay $805 on one count of fourth-degree theft of property.
He was initially charged with five counts of cargo theft, but four charges were dismissed. The City of Charleston must pay $655 in fines only on the dismissed charges, according to Blount County Court.
“We are very pleased that the Blount County Prosecutor’s Office considered all of the evidence and, more importantly, Deandre’s life and personal circumstances,” Charleston attorney Brett Bloomston told AL told .com. “Since this incident, DeAndre has proven by his own actions that he deserves a non-custodial sentence. He is a wonderful young man with a bright future.”
What originally happened?
Charleston, a former FedEx contract driver, confessed in December 2021 to dumping hundreds of packages in a nearby ravine, according to Alabama State Police.
Charleston, of Adamsville, Alabama, admitted to unlawfully dumping packages in five separate incidents between November 17, 2021 and November 24, 2021. At a press conference, Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon acknowledged that Charleston was cooperating with law enforcement.
President Moon said at a press conference that 153 packages worth about $15,000 were linked to the victims, and 247 packages worth about $25,000 were unidentified or were scanned to identify the victims. He said he was unable to do so.

What happened to the package?
The sheriff’s office confirmed that deputies were guarding a package found near Hayden in north central Alabama. A FedEx employee then picked them up.
FedEx delivered recovered packages and resolved damaged packages.
“The safety of our customers’ packages is our top priority and we are committed to treating our customers’ packages with the utmost care,” FedEx said in a statement at the time.
