Long exposures on iPhone: no tripod required

I always carry my iPhone with me (I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max) and have been able to take great images even when I don’t have my usual equipment with me. However, there are times when you want to take long exposures, and without a tripod, you’ll have a hard time using just your iPhone.

Enter Spectre. It’s basically an AI-powered shutter for the iPhone. This app has been released for a few years now and there have been several updates to improve the app. The authors also developed Halide, which is generally considered one of the best photo apps on the iPhone.

What is it for?

Specter has three new features. First, it can drive crowds away. How many times have you been photographing amazing landscapes or architecture, only to have people get in your way? With Specter, you can eliminate them when they’re moving. Frankly, if an app has all these features, it’s good enough for me.

I wanted to take this photo of this bridge, but there were 3 or 4 people walking around. On the Specter, I set a 9 second exposure. Since everyone was moving, Specter had enough data to remove the pedestrians and leave the bridge.

People are visible in the first image of the live image. And after a few seconds they start to disappear.

(In fact, one person at the edge of the bridge is still there, not moving.) As mentioned earlier, the photo uses Apple Live Video, so you can play it back and watch the people disappear. However, in the end, you are left with an image of no people. wonderful.

At night, the app uses AI scene detection to switch modes and capture light trails for city photography and light painting.

Specter can also smooth water. Perfect for soothing ripples in fountains, oceans, and lakes. Of course, you can always do this with an exposed camera and a tripod, but bringing this to your iPhone is a breeze.

To make it all work, Specter uses scene detection, intelligent exposure adjustment, and automatic stabilization, so you don’t even need a tripod.

Using Specter

Using Specter, I was surprised at how stable the images were with this app. Everything seemed well exposed. The camera controls were very easy to use. You don’t have to read detailed on-screen manuals to get great images.

On a recent trip to central Arizona, I was surprised at how easy it was to get useful photos from an app I had never used before. My favorite feature was eliminating people from landscape photos. It also had an effect on water flowing in a stream, allowing the water to appear blurred while the rocks and background remained sharp.

I don’t think my iPhone will be replacing mirrorless cameras or other gear anytime soon, but when I don’t have regular gear, the Specter allows me to do things my iPhone couldn’t do before. can do.

Will it work with my iPhone?

Specter works with iPhone 6 or later and requires iOS 11 or later. Specter’s smart automatic scene detection requires iOS 12. AI-based stabilization is only available on devices with Neural Engine (iPhone 8 and later). On iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Specter captures at a lower resolution.

How much is it?

The free version allows exposures up to 3 seconds. If you want to purchase the app, it’s a one-time price of $4.99. With no subscription required, lifetime use, and improved functionality for your phone, it’s an absolute steal.

Are there any negatives?

It’s not perfect. There were some issues with the water flow and it got blurry, but so did the river bed. It took a few tries, but it finally worked. I wasn’t disappointed. Specter has allowed me to take some photos that I wouldn’t have been able to take on my iPhone without this software. I highly recommend his Specter. Try the free version and you’ll be hooked.
