Apple may be preparing to bring AI to iOS 18, but will the next iPhone be able to keep up?
While the smartphone world requires a combination of AI and powerful hardware and software, Apple has yet to dabble in the software side of artificial intelligence. The latest report from the Taiwan Economic Daily team highlights TSMC’s 2nm chipset plans, putting Apple in pole position to launch new iPhones powered by this next-generation silicon.
Chips built on 2nm offer better persistence with more efficient use of power, similar to how 3nm enjoyed similar benefits to the 5nm process.
In the coming years, smartphone manufacturers will offer more AI capabilities to consumers. The biggest signal is Samsung, whose recent Galaxy Unpacked launch event for the S24 family of smartphones was dominated by Galaxy AI. AI is gaining attention not only from other Android-based manufacturers, but also from chipmakers such as Qualcomm and Mediatek.
It remains to be seen how Apple will specifically tackle AI on the iPhone. The release of iOS 18 at June’s Worldwide Developer Conference will be a key moment in Apple’s AI story. Qualcomm and its competitors are all building AI support into their hardware and will need to follow suit with their upcoming A18 and A19 Apple Silicom chipsets unless Apple opts out of using AI on mobile platforms completely. there is.
The A19 chipset is set for a 2025 debut and is ideal for the switch to the 2nm process. This means that compared to his A18 and iPhone 16 Pro, which are based on 3nm, the functionality of the A19, and by extension the iPhone 17 Pro, will be significantly improved.
Similar to the older iPhone “S” devices, which followed industry specifications but never pushed beyond the limits, the iPhone 16 Pro appears to be a transitional device that simply iterates on existing hardware.
Big changes have to be made to the software, so AI has to make up the difference.
