I bought a car without Apple CarPlay and I don’t miss it at all – that’s a problem

I bought a very old car, Apple CarPlay or android auto,I love it. This is an old BMW and it has USB, but nothing fancy. I use the built-in navigation system for maps and Bluetooth for music. I don’t miss CarPlay at all. In fact, I’m relieved that I don’t have to rely on my smartphone anymore. This is a big problem for Apple and Google. Instead of improving the situation, CarPlay and Android Auto have made it worse in every way.

What can my old car do that CarPlay can’t? Let’s start with what it can’t do. It never freezes. There’s no endless pauses when switching from music to maps, wondering if you need to restart something. Only the internal combustion engine restarts. Navigation system works fine.

Using Android Auto and CarPlay, I am constantly battling bugs and glitches. The audio would stop while listening to an Audible audiobook, or Waze would hang, leaving the map frozen on the screen when he was about to make a critical turn.

wonderful. Now I’m driving 85 miles per hour, troubleshooting my car and trying to figure out what to do about a missed exit.

That is, if you manage to leave before the problem starts. I am constantly facing connectivity issues with both Android Auto and CarPlay. On Android, not only does it disconnect your device from Bluetooth (why do you need BT for a wired CarPlay connection?!), but it also removes your car from the list of Bluetooth devices. I’ve seen this happen multiple times with the best Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel smartphones.

My Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max is a fraction more reliable. Although the connectivity issues have decreased, CarPlay still frequently freezes when I need to switch between apps, especially apps that play audio content.

Once upon a time, I made the terrible mistake of relying on my iPhone for CarPlay while running Apple’s iOS 17 beta software. CarPlay broke on every trip. My friend, I will never do that again. I had a harrowing experience with high-speed software crashing, and it was impossible to downgrade from the beta software in an emergency.

Buttons are good but touch screen is bad

I use my cell phone in the kitchen, but not for cutting vegetables.

My car isn’t perfect. BMW’s complex iDrive entertainment system is quite notorious. Still, I like it much more than the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro Max. pixel 8 pro or galaxy s24 ultra It controls my system. It may not have a voice assistant or messaging feature. It can be a hassle to navigate with only hand dials and button presses. Still, it’s much better than a touchscreen.

My favorite thing about my car is avoiding touchscreens. There are six programmable buttons that can be programmed to perform any action on the display screen. In addition to radio stations, you can also program navigation shortcuts, music, and travel computer buttons.

No need to tap the touchscreen multiple times for each common task. When you want to go home, press button number 1. It has real big buttons so you can operate it without looking. BMW realized (at the time) that buttons were more efficient than focusing attention on a small display. I wish more car companies and cell phone manufacturers would learn this path.

I love using CarPlay and Android Auto. My phone is smart and has music, audiobooks, and navigation shortcuts all preloaded. My phone can send text messages just by listening to me, and I can also prioritize my notifications to filter out the unimportant ones.

Your phone should be part of your car, but it shouldn’t be the centerpiece. I use my cell phone in the kitchen, but I don’t use it to cut vegetables. I use it to read recipes, but not to stir the pot.

Cars need to be absolutely safe, but smartphones can break down

In the car, your phone should provide information and content, but it shouldn’t be a button or a knob. The phone is very bad at buttons and knobs, but it has actual buttons and knobs in place. You need to keep your eyes on the road. Touchscreens are obviously stupid for driving, and it’s shocking that automakers and cellphone manufacturers have allowed themselves to collaborate on this.

Smartphones aren’t designed to be absolutely safe when hurtling down the highway with two tons of metal and gasoline. My car is built to react quickly to any situation. When you put your car in reverse, the rear view camera will appear so you don’t run over the person behind you.

My smartphone isn’t very responsive. What happens if your mobile phone breaks? It won’t restart immediately. There is a software bug and it freezes, so you have to be patient. Who would drive something like this?

We need to laugh at the ridiculous idea that the future is entirely touchscreen and get back to tools that work. I keep using the knob to turn up the volume and turn off CarPlay until my phone’s touchscreen works better than the car stereo’s knob.
