After four years in Trenton, Andrew Brooke has returned to the U.S. Department of Justice as the new Chief of Staff and Deputy Attorney General in the Office of Deputy U.S. Attorney Lisa O. Monaco.
Brooke served as acting attorney general for eight months after the resignation of Gurbir Grewal, who resigned after Gov. Phil Murphy appointed Matt Platkin to the post earlier this year. He spent four years in the Murphy administration as assistant attorney general and first assistant attorney general before the administration appointed him acting attorney general last July.
He became the first openly gay head of the state Department of Law and Public Safety and devoted much attention to reducing the number of illegal guns in New Jersey.
“I’m back at the place I love, the United States Department of Justice. After five wonderful years in New Jersey, I’m excited to return to the Department of Justice’s Office of the Deputy Attorney General,” Brook said. “I’m looking forward to this new chapter.”
Mr. Brooke, 39, is a graduate of Princeton University and Stanford Law School, and served as a law clerk to New Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner from 2008 to 2009. He worked as a litigation associate at Davis Polk & Wardell and then completed his law practice. He worked for the U.S. Department of Justice for five years.
He served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the State of New Jersey, serving as Senior Counsel, Deputy Chief of Staff, and Acting Chief of Staff to Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates.
