Senator Patricia Pat Parris, a long-time member of the Barbados Labor Party (BLP), will become the party’s new chief executive officer.

Her role was announced on Tuesday at a press conference at the party’s headquarters on Roebuck Street in the city, taking up the post she had not held for more than 15 years. Parris said her party office aims to ensure the party fulfills its responsibilities to district branches in order to better meet the needs of voters.

She explained that as part of her role, she is also required to ensure that MPs are reporting to constituents and addressing concerns.

“While this is not a new position for the Barbados Labor Party, we have had a vacant position for over 15 years. It’s about ensuring we are in a better position to respond to people’s needs,” she said.

At a swearing-in ceremony in State House on Wednesday, January 26, Prime Minister Mia Mottley told sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) to spend at least half a day in their constituencies each week, unless they are sick or off-island. Obliged.

Parris also said he would police members of Congress to comply with the directive.

“The process is going well and part of my duty as CEO is to ensure that the Prime Minister gives the people of this country the power to report and (visibly) and be able to go to your constituency branches. Mr. Parris has held a number of public positions, including former director of communications.
