The move marks the creation of the Barcelona Science and Innovation District (BaSID), Catalonia’s first scientific innovation hub, with an investment of over 200 million euros. Notable acquisitions include the Illumina facility in Esprougus de Llobregat and the Bayers facility in San Juan d’Espi, which will be central to developing BaSID as a campus dedicated to life sciences and innovation in Catalonia.
Javier de Pablo, co-CEO of DeepLabs, highlighted the company’s efforts to position Barcelona as a leading hub for science and innovation. BaSID will provide state-of-the-art laboratory and scientific facilities to address the current space shortage in Spain. Its aim is to provide science and innovation leaders with best-in-class facilities within a collaborative ecosystem that fosters partnerships between scientists, universities, entrepreneurs, and industry-leading companies.
Bayer remains BaSID’s main tenant, taking up about half of the hub’s space and locating its Spanish headquarters there. The facility is recognized for its sustainability and efficiency, and will achieve emissions neutrality in 2022 through initiatives such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting. BaSID’s proximity to Barcelona’s Scientific Park and other biotech and pharmaceutical companies as well as academic and hospital environments is expected to strengthen collaboration with local talent and researchers.
DeepLabs’ commitment to Spain’s life sciences sector is evidenced by the development of innovation districts like MaSID, Spain’s first life sciences district. MaSID is located in Tres Cantos, Madrid, with its community of over 3,000 experts in biotechnology, aerospace and biomedicine, and 70,000 square meters of advanced laboratory and development space. This pioneering approach by DeepLabs will introduce a new level of scientific hub to Spain and strengthen the competitiveness of the life sciences and innovation sector.
