The Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice holds monthly movie nights to build community within the department and find things to do outside of class.

The idea was developed by Dr. Ben Peterson, assistant professor of political science, to get students more engaged in the department.

“I often suggest and select old classic movies that I think my students would enjoy but that they may not know or have seen themselves,” Peterson said.

Peterson said he chose a variety of films that were related to political science in some way.

“It’s one thing to read about them and think about them conceptually, but it’s interesting to see how these things play out in real historical examples,” Peterson said. .

Kanan Fairley, a second-year political science major from San Antonio, often attends the department’s movie nights, where he enjoys seeing events depicted on a movie screen rather than simply reading about them in a textbook. , he says that the event brings him to life.

“It’s a very cool, laid-back environment, so you can relax after a long week and see what your professors are up to outside of work,” Fairley said.

This Friday’s movie is Majora documentary about the 1960 Wisconsin Democratic primary between John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey.

lincolnThe drama, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, is about Abraham Lincoln’s fight for the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which outlawed slavery.

Peterson said he’s looking forward to watching. battle of algiers. He considers the film to be a “war” film with current ties to the conflict between Israel and Hamas. lastly, all seasons man is a 1966 film about Sir Thomas More’s struggle against King Henry VIII.

The movie night is not only attended by people from the political science department. This program is for students, faculty, or staff interested in learning more about political science.

“I love movies, so this is something I wanted to do to bring our departments together,” Peterson said.
