In an interesting development, former BTA general secretary Boikobo Gaolebalwe is challenging incumbent president Oaitse Tipe. Mr Gaolebalwe previously served two terms from 2009 to 2017 under the BTA Executive Committee led by former President Nelson Amanze. Dr Kaulani Fitchani was detained until the 2019 elections, when he faced off against Mr Tippe. Tefo Tefo won the vice-presidential executive position in 2017, defeating Gaolebarwe. Gaolebalwe took the time to regroup and returned to claim glory with his team. But Tippe feels he deserves a chance to serve out his final term. He said it was interesting that Gaolebalwe and his team were competing for positions during their inactivity in the tennis world. He said the team also did not attend the last BTA Annual General Meeting (AGM). Mr. Tipe’s other committee members, Mr. Tefo and Mr. Ali Karmali, are not looking for new tidbits.
Tippe told MmegiSport that he wants to finish the job he started in 2019. “If I am given a new mandate, I will give my players the opportunity to play in Grand Slams.” By the end of my term, I hope to hold at least 15 weeks of international tennis tournaments. This year we hosted six international tournaments. “Tennis should be played in areas where it didn’t exist before, like the Kalahari and Ganzi,” he said. Tippe, 42, said the number of coaches and various other organizations should be increased nationally. He said the National Tennis Center would reopen in January and prepare the facility for a 10-week men’s and women’s professional tournament. He added that there are also plans to host the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Level 2 in 2024 or 2025. During Tipe’s tenure, BTA won two awards in 2020 from the African Tennis Confederation (CAT) as Africa’s Best Development Program.
In October, BTA was once again awarded the Best Development Award for Southern Africa by the ITF. Mr Gaolebalwe said BTA had the potential to reach new heights and make a lasting impact. He said one of his main motivations is to promote the growth of tennis at all levels. “My plan is to host more than 5 national tournaments, 5 development activities, 10 regional tournaments and implement more than 10 Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programs. “We want to have players who are more competitive than most,” he said. Gaolebalwe said the team’s priority areas include player and infrastructure development, promotion, marketing, partnerships, collaboration, governance, integrity and supporter engagement. “I am committed to improving the quality of coaching and training programs within our association. This includes investing in the professional development of our coaches, providing resources for state-of-the-art facilities and introducing innovative training methods. It includes facilitation,” said Gaolebalwe.
