As Republican front-runner Donald Trump holds a rally in Chesapeake, home to one of the largest numbers of U.S. military personnel, the Democratic National Committee is reminding Virginia voters of Trump’s past comments about U.S. troops.
A montage of Trump-era news coverage of the incident will be shown on a mobile billboard traveling around the Hampton Roads area ahead of the rally, NBC News has learned.
Many of the news articles on the mobile billboard revolved around a September 2020 article by Jeffrey Goldberg in The Atlantic titled, “Trump: Americans Who Died in War Are ‘Losers’ and ‘Idiots,'” a topic that was also discussed during last night’s debate.
“As Donald Trump heads to Virginia today, voters will be reminded of the disrespect and pain he inflicted on our military personnel and their families as commander in chief,” Democratic National Committee spokesperson Tracy King told NBC News. “President Biden is the only candidate in this election who will fight for our military members and honor their sacrifice. Virginians will head to the polls in November remembering how Donald Trump disrespected our heroes and how President Biden fought for them.”
When Biden brought up the reported comments from the debate, Trump countered, “These stories he made up about the military being losers and idiots are complete lies and a disgrace. He made them up. They were published in a third-rate magazine, like a lot of these magazines, which don’t sell. He made them up.”
Trump will be joined at today’s rally by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, marking the first time the two will appear on the same stage.
Responding to the candidates’ performance last night, Youngkin posted on X, “What could be clearer? Strengths and weaknesses. That’s why Virginia is at stake. See you tomorrow in Chesapeake, Mr. President!”
