COLUMBUS, Mississippi (WCBI) – For more than 35 years, some of the best and brightest high school juniors and seniors have spent the final two years of their school careers in Columbus.
Since 1987, the Mississippi School of Mathematics and Science has been based on the campus of Mississippi University for Women.
The current leadership of both schools hopes to continue this relationship.
This was part of the message at today’s Town and Tower meeting at MUW.
The program focused on the history, mission and successes of MSMS.
Speakers included Ginger Tedder, the school’s executive director and alumna, Emma Richardson, a former faculty member and author of a history of the school, and current Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Thomas Easterling.
The three touted the unique opportunities MSMS students have and the school’s strong ties to Columbus and The W.
“In some ways, MSMS is a child of Columbus. We were born here, we grew up here. And the relationships that MSMS has with not only The W but the broader community are very important to who we are. Our public face is in many ways tied to our relationship with Columbus. We have ‘Tales From the Crypt.’ We have the ‘8 of May’ program. We’ve had science carnivals for elementary school kids for decades. We make sure our math outreach programs impact the lives of elementary school kids. So in many ways, MSMS and Columbus should be spoken of in the same sentence.”
“Diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and so is our people. When we graduate from MSMS, we understand many cultures that we may not have been exposed to before, and we incorporate those cultures into our education at MSMS. It becomes part of campus life for the two years we spend as students.”
Town and Tower’s mission is to build relationships between MUW, Columbus, Lowndes County and Columbus Air Force Base.
