“We need innovative clinical delivery models that truly slow and reverse the progression of unnecessary disease and the enormous expenses that come with it. Lifestyle medicine offers that promise, and we are fortunate to have a forward-thinking organization like ACLM spearheading that movement.”

The traditional fee-for-service model of healthcare delivery, which rewards physicians for the quantity and not the quality of services they provide, isn’t working. Health expectancy and life expectancy continue to decline, even though the United States spends more on healthcare than other high-income countries. To improve patient outcomes and contain costs, a fundamental shift to a value-based model that emphasizes quality and efficiency of care is underway. Lifestyle medicine, which addresses the root causes of disease rather than just managing symptoms, provides high-value, whole-person care.

Innovators Council members will work together to accelerate systemic change by unravelling the complexities of system-wide adoption and implementation of lifestyle medicine. Together, members will improve the performance of risk-based contracting, advance large-scale workforce development efforts, and explore new applications of systems-level integration through pilot and demonstration projects.

ACLM President Beth FratesThe MD, FACLM, DipABLM, said the creation of the Innovators Council is an important next step for the rapidly evolving field of lifestyle medicine and the transformation of health care.

“Momentum toward value-based care is growing, and evidence shows that lifestyle medicine has the power to prevent, treat and even reverse many of the most costly and common chronic diseases,” said Dr. Frates.

“As healthcare organizations that bear financial risk in the process of delivering care, it is critical that members of ACLM’s New Innovators Council are part of the solution to achieve our five-fold goal of improving population health, reducing costs, increasing clinician and patient satisfaction, and advancing health equity.”

“This is a new era for ACLM,” said the ACLM president-elect. Padmaja PatelMD, FACLM, DipABLM, said, “From educating health care professionals and advocating for a lifestyle medicine-first approach to healthcare, we now have a unique and unprecedented opportunity to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, including payers and ACOs, to showcase the value of lifestyle medicine. We are excited about the potential of these partnerships and look forward to working closely with each.”

Comments from the founding members

Ben Quirke“The days of value-based care organizations simply recruiting physicians who already have high performance records and signing them to risky contracts are long gone,” said , founder and CEO of Healthly. “We need innovative clinical delivery models that truly slow and reverse the progression of unnecessary disease and the massive expenses that come with it. Lifestyle medicine offers that promise, and we’re fortunate to have a forward-thinking organization like ACLM spearheading that movement. The Innovators Council will enable us to collaborate with our peers at other leading organizations that are breaking the mold of our broken health care system.”

Tom Weigel“As a member of the American Council of Lifestyle Medicine Innovators, Blue Cross Blue Shield Vermont is committed to advancing the principles of lifestyle medicine to promote sustainable health and wellness. The recent increase in use of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs highlights the urgent need for effective obesity management strategies. While these drugs can be beneficial, they often come with significant costs and potential side effects. Lifestyle medicine offers a powerful alternative that not only aids in weight loss, but also improves overall health, reduces the risk of chronic disease and empowers individuals to take control of their health. Our commitment to lifestyle medicine reflects our belief in its transformative potential to make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of our members.”

Mark Breisacher“We share the ACLM’s goal of making it easier for clinicians to practice lifestyle medicine and to make lifestyle medicine treatments more accessible to people of all backgrounds,” said Dr. Gregory, MD, senior vice president of ROA Health ACO. “The greatest success has come when we have been able to align incentives so that everyone benefits when lifestyle medicine is used in treatment – payers, clinicians, patients and drug/device suppliers. The ACLM Innovators Council is a place where all these stakeholders can come together and find ways to do this.”

Alex Ding“Humana is proud to be a founding member of the ACLM Innovators Council. The Council serves as a convener of key stakeholders to collaborate, co-develop and implement lifestyle medicine programs at scale. This acceleration of lifestyle medicine is a key driver in refocusing our health care system to truly focus on patient health, prevention and wellness,” said Dr. Levine, MD, Humana’s vice president of Physician Strategy and Medical Affairs.

Angie Karousek EbrahimiSenior Director of Lifestyle Medicine at Blue Shield California“Blue Shield has long recognized the transformative potential of lifestyle medicine to reshape how health care is delivered in our country. Bringing together thought leaders through the ACLM Innovators Council is a vital tool for future collaboration and innovation. We are confident that the relationships built through the Council will expedite and unify the process of bringing valuable solutions-based approaches to market, improving the well-being of our members and other Americans.”

Jessica RiglerVice President of Population Health and Innovation at Blue Cross Blue Shield Arizona “Blue Cross Blue Shield Arizona ” is proud to be a part of the American Academy of Lifestyle Medicine Innovators Council and collaborate with other leaders in the field of lifestyle medicine. As an organization serving more than two million Arizonans, we recognize the importance of addressing the root causes of chronic disease and empowering our members and communities to make healthy choices that improve their quality of life. By partnering with ACLM, we hope to advance the evidence-based practice of lifestyle medicine and make it more accessible and affordable for our members and communities.”
