On Tuesday, May 28, 20 Elon University students arrived in Manhattan to begin their journey with the Study USA Elon in New York program. Students will take a core capstone seminar, intern with an organization in the city, take a field trip exploring New York’s rich diversity, and engage with alumni through networking events.

The students began their summer in the city with a field trip to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, learning about the history of Ellis Island and the immigrants who came there in search of a new life.
Students also took a guided tour of the historic tenement buildings of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, toured the Tenement Museum, and heard stories of immigrants and settlers. Many other field trips are planned to help students learn more about the history and diversity of New York City.

Students are taking a core capstone course, “COR 3620 – Understanding Diversity in the Workplace,” under the guidance of Professor Baljinder Singh. These programming events are regularly planned to reinforce what students are learning in the classroom. New York City is home to people who speak more than 200 languages, and more than 3 million New Yorkers are foreign-born.
Once students are acclimated to city life, internships, a key part of the program experience, begin. These internships are a great opportunity for students to explore future career paths and determine if city life is right for them. The Study USA Elon in New York program is open to all majors, and students will intern with organizations that align with their major and career goals.
