A healthy lifestyle may also be beneficial in older age, according to a study published online June 20. JAMA Network Open.
Dr. Li Yaqi of Fudan University in China and colleagues looked at the healthy lifestyles of Chinese people aged 80 and over and their chances of living to be over 100. The analysis included data from 5,222 people who participated in the China Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Study.
The researchers found that during an average of five years of follow-up, 373 of 1,486 people with the lowest Healthy Lifestyle Score out of 100 (HLS-100, scores 0-2) and 276 of 851 people with the highest HLS-100 lived to be 100 years old or older.
When comparing the highest and lowest HLS-100 groups, the adjusted odds ratio was 1.61. Looking at centenarians who were in relatively good health (including self-reported chronic diseases, physical and cognitive function, and mental health), a similar association was found (adjusted odds ratio, 1.54).
“Adhering to a healthy lifestyle appears to be important even in older age, suggesting that strategic planning to improve lifestyle habits among all older adults may play an important role in promoting healthy aging and longevity,” the authors write.
