ALPENA — Free ROV drop-in sessions will be offered on various dates this summer from noon to 3 p.m.. The sessions will be held in the maker space near the large marine technology training tanks at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center.

The whole family can pilot an ROV in NOAA’s test tanks and learn how these vehicles are used in science and industry. You can modify the ROV to perform tasks like lifting “debris” and restoring fish habitat. Earn stamps on each mission to track your progress and celebrate as you move through the levels. You can take part in multiple dates and progress each time.

Upcoming ROV drop-in dates are June 26th, July 2nd, July 11th, July 26th, August 6th, August 10th and August 21st.

In addition to the ROV sessions, a “Science on a Sphere” presentation will be free and open to the public.

Hidden in a dark room at the Great Lakes Marine Heritage Center is an incredibly powerful tool that’s often overlooked: your chance to receive an interactive presentation about science on a sphere. There are fewer than 200 such spheres in the United States, and Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary is home to one of them. The carbon fiber sphere houses four HD projectors that display climate data collected by NOAA and other scientists.

ROV sessions will be held throughout the summer at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center.

At 2pm on the dates listed below, members of the TBNMS team will use the globe to give an interactive presentation touching on climate science, ocean acidification science, and the fascinating freshwater acidification happening here in Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

“Science on a Sphere” dates are June 24th, June 26th, July 2nd, July 11th, July 26th and July 28th.

The Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center is located at 500 W. Fletcher St. in Alpena.
