As hinted at in previous releases, Android 15 Beta 3 adds an “Adaptive Timeout” toggle to the Pixel display settings.
This new toggle will likely go beyond the current “Screen Timeout” control, which can be set from 15 seconds to 30 minutes. As long as you have screen lock enabled, your phone will automatically lock after this prescribed period of inactivity to keep your device safe. To keep this from becoming excessive, there’s a “Screen Attention” toggle, which uses the front-facing camera to determine if you’re looking at the display to prevent your Pixel from automatically locking based on your timeout setting.
Android 15 Beta 3 has a new “Adaptive Timeout” option, which “Automatically turn off the screen when you’re not using your device.” It’s not clear how this is determined, but it likely uses some of the hardware on the device, like the front-facing camera or a proximity sensor at the top of the device, to determine if you’re using the phone and then decide whether to keep it unlocked or lock it based on this context.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to work right now: in our testing, when running Android 15 Beta 3, the Pixel simply obeys the screen timeout setting, ignoring any “Adaptive timeout” options you toggle.
The addition of the Adaptive Screen Timeout option expands on the quality of life improvements sprinkled throughout previous Android 15 betas.
