We’ll find out what Apple has in store for the next generation of Apple devices at this year’s World Wide Developers Conference, which starts in Cupertino at 10am PST on Monday, June 7. A new report claims that a new name for AI is planned for Apple Intelligence.
The iPhone 15 Pro should come with Apple Intelligence, but the iPhone 15 might not.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the WWDC keynote is set to be a big hit, and while it won’t be the first time AI is announced, there will likely be some unique announcements.
“Apple is not the first to adopt a new product category, as we famously see with the iPhone, smartwatch and Vision Pro. All of these areas were established before the company came on the scene, but Apple found a way to make its mark,” Gurman says.
The move will see the company deeply integrate AI into its apps and features and “reemphasize its commitment to privacy and security.”The company’s new AI system, called Apple Intelligence, will be included in new versions of its operating systems for iPhones, iPads and Macs, according to a person familiar with the plans.
Apple Intelligence is expected to take up half of the two-hour keynote, but the company is “putting less emphasis on cutting-edge technologies like image and video generation, concentrating instead on features with broad appeal.”
Due to ongoing concerns about privacy, these new features will be opt-in, meaning no one has to adopt them if they don’t want to.
Gurman argues that given the processing requirements of AI, users will need the latest iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or at least an iPad or Mac with an M1 processor. The iPhone 16 series, which will be released this fall, is also expected to support AI.
These will initially be in beta and are thought to be powered by a combination of Apple’s own technology and tools from OpenAI, with whom the company has a partnership.
“The services will rely on either on-device processing or cloud-based computing, depending on the sophistication of the task at hand, and the new operating systems will contain algorithms that determine which approach to take for any given task,” Gurman said.
