There are now many powerful password generators and managers available, such as 1Password and LastPass, that offer users a way to securely generate and store their passwords, but at an additional cost.
Building on this theme, iPhone maker Apple is apparently designing its own password manager app exclusively for its Mac and iPhone systems. The news was first reported by Mark Gurman recently and is set to be unveiled with a bang at the tech giant’s WWDC, scheduled for three days from now.
Apple’s latest feature, simply called “Password,” will be built into the system and experts believe it will be a major competitive advantage for other paid rivals in the industry.
The company already introduces unique passwords and gives users the opportunity to store them via iCloud Keychain, which is designed to sync passwords across all of their devices, and also lets you store passwords on your Windows computer using a browser extension.
But what was once considered too complicated is now much easier as the functionality is built into Apple devices, a smart arrangement that also ensures that users stay within the company’s ecosystem.
Like other rival products, the new Passwords app splits passwords into multiple categories, such as a user’s accounts, passkeys, and even Wi-Fi. It also lets you import passwords from a range of rival products and automatically fill them in when the device detects you’re logged into a site or app.
Passwords will also work on Apple’s $4,000 Vision Pro headset and is similar to how Google Authenticator works, meaning it will also show support for 2FA codes, though it needs to be more clear about whether the new app will let you securely store files and images in addition to regular passwords.
Remember, we’re only comparing Apple’s products to those of other competitors in the industry, including LastPass and 1Password.
We’re also expecting Apple to unveil its latest models at its conference this Monday, a conference everyone will be watching as AI will be a major part of many interfaces.
