Three Wayne Community College science instructors recently presented at the annual meeting of the North Carolina Association of Community College Biology Instructors (NC3ABI).
Lynn Swafford, Sondi Hoffman and Amy Cherry Millis represented WCC at the conference, held at Alamance Community College. According to Swafford, about 80 instructors attend the statewide conference each year.
Swafford and Hoffman gave a presentation titled, “Science Night: Making Connections.” They spoke about WCC’s Science Night outreach event, organized by biology honors students for free, hands-on activities that area children could participate in. The speakers highlighted the positive impact of the event and shared ways others can plan their own similar events.
Hoffman and Millis presented “Harmonization and Trivia for General Biology and Anatomy and Physiology.” The instructors spoke about how to increase student engagement in online and hybrid classes through various resources. They discussed how to address challenges regarding lab preparation time, student engagement during labs, and supplemental study sheets.
Swafford currently serves as secretary of NC3ABI.
“As secretary, I’ll be helping plan the conference, reaching out to all NC3ABI members and organizing all of the documentation,” she explained. Hoffman will take on the role of NC3ABI Eastern Region Representative in the fall. “This means she (and the WCC) will be hosting a smaller conference for people in the eastern part of the state in fall 2024,” Swafford said.
