Newly elected Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) chairman Bissooondial Singh has indicated his intention to run for the top post at Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) level but said a final decision would be taken after consultation with stakeholders.
The DCB held the elections under court supervision, paving the way for elections at the GCB and the appointment of an ombudsman by the Minister of Sports.
The appointment was made by Sports Minister Charles Ramson Jr. shortly after the DCB process was concluded on Friday, with lawyer Kamal Ramkaran appointed as ombudsman and GCB elections scheduled for February 26.
Questioner Newsroom Sports Asked if he was interested in the GCB chairman post, Singh said: “As of now, I am interested.”
“that [GCB Elections] “It’s going to be a transparent and democratic process. Elections are a democratic process and we’ll see how it goes.”
Singh further noted that cooperation between all parties was important to move the sport forward and said he was willing to extend a hand of reconciliation to all involved.
Two of the Demerara Board’s five member associations, the East Bank Cricket Association and the West Demerara Cricket Association, did not send representatives to the DCB elections, while representatives from the Georgetown Cricket Association, East Coast Cricket Board and the Upper Demerara Cricket Association attended on Friday.
“It (the absence of the two associations) is a concern and we intend to actively engage. We are open to reconciliation. There is no need to be at odds with anyone, but now is the time for us to come together and resolve this issue. This has gone on too long.”
The businessman added: “Let’s work together and solve the problems. If you are interested in cricket but not personality, put that aside and let’s improve cricket. Let me hear what your problems are and I will tell you how I think it can be solved. Nothing can be done without conservation. Let’s have a discussion and be proactive in trying to solve it.”
Singh said that at the DCB level, the implementation committee needs to assess the resources it has at present to determine what plans it can implement.
“We need to look at what infrastructure is in place, what the funding is, and then sit down with the board and set up a committee.”
“When I meet everyone, [will] If we have a programme that is not just for Demerara, it is a waste of time, it should be a national project and I will share it with the Minister. [Charles Ramson Jr.] Let’s see if we can get his cooperation to take cricket in Guyana forward.”
