The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued multiple recalls last week, including a recall notice for more than 125,000 Tesla vehicles, due to issues with their seat belt warning systems.

Here’s what you need to know about vehicle recalls announced by NHTSA between May 26th and June 1st.

Mercedes-Benz recalls cars after batteries suddenly die
Mercedes-Benz is recalling 14,912 of its vehicles. In an NHTSA report, the luxury automaker said software in its battery management system could cause the high-voltage battery to shut down. The defect could cause a sudden loss of traction, which could increase the risk of a crash.
Dealers will update the battery management system software, and notification letters are expected to be sent out July 23. Owners can contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

Volkswagen recalls cars over headlight software flaw
Volkswagen is recalling 17,797 2022-2024 Q4 E-Tron and Q4 E-Tron Sportback vehicles. According to an NHTSA report, the automaker said the vehicles may have been installed with incorrect headlight control module software. The issue could cause parking lights, headlights and turn signals to not function properly. This could impair visibility and increase the risk of a crash.
NHTSA said the vehicles do not comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, “Lamps, Reflectors, and Related Equipment.”
To resolve this issue, dealers will update the headlight control module with a new data set. All servicing will be done free of charge. Notification letters are expected to arrive by July 12th. Owners can contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi’s number for this recall is 941L.

Jaguar recalls rearview camera for lack of image quality
Jaguar is recalling 22,268 2018-2022 Range Rover Sports vehicles equipped with a surround camera system. The luxury car maker says water may get into the rearview camera, causing a missing or distorted image to appear on the display. An improperly displayed image from the rearview camera could reduce the driver’s visibility, increasing the risk of injury or a crash, the NHTSA report said.
NHTSA also found that the vehicles did not comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111, “Rear Visibility.”
If you have an affected vehicle, your dealer will inspect the rearview camera for damage. Depending on what the mechanic finds, a free service will be performed to seal, replace or adjust the camera. Recall notices are expected to be sent out on July 19th. Owners can contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover’s phone number for this recall is N901. These vehicles were previously recalled for the same issue under 24V-023 and require new measures to be completed.

Ford recalls rearview camera for distorted image
Ford is recalling 109,283 2020-2024 Lincoln Aviator vehicles. According to the NHTSA report, the Accessory Protocol Image Module (APIM) may be affected by electromagnetic interference from mobile phones in the vehicle. As a result, the rearview camera image may flicker or become distorted. A flickering or distorted rearview camera image can reduce the driver’s rearward visibility and increase the risk of a crash.
Ford is now asking owners of affected vehicles to avoid using cell phones while reversing until the problem is resolved. Dealers will install the shields on APIMs free of charge. Recall notification letters are expected to arrive by July 8. Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford’s phone number for this recall is 24S35.

Tesla recalls due to seatbelt defect
Tesla is recalling 125,227 vehicles for a problem where the seat belt warning light and chime may not activate if the driver is not wearing a seat belt. According to the NHTSA report, if a vehicle does not notify drivers or passengers that their seat belts are not fastened, this could increase the risk of injury or death in a crash.
According to the NHTSA report, the vehicles do not comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”
To fix this issue, Tesla will release an over-the-air software update. Notification letters are expected to arrive by July 27. Owners can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-24-00-008.
