The Booker Prize is a very prestigious award given to the most prestigious literary works. Sometimes science fiction books circulate among literary circles. Details of the Booker Prize are as follows:
On the more dystopian end of the genre, memory police, Orwell’s novel about the horrors of state surveillance. Set on an unnamed island off an unnamed coast, oblivion slowly begins to spread. An evil fascist group called the Memory Police is responsible for these erasures, removing both the physical objects and, as a result, the collective memory of the population. However, the writer learns that his editor is one of the few people with memory, and decides to protect him at all costs.
This is a science fiction novel that explores an alternate reality under totalitarian rule from which escape seems impossible. The original was written in Japanese by Yoko Ogawa, who is considered one of Japan’s greatest writers. memory policye was first published in 1994, but it took more than 25 years to be translated into English. Despite this gap, the novel is clearly prescient in a world where fake news and alternative facts color the norm. Ogawa’s haunting, dreamlike prose deftly creates a sense of disquiet as she explores the fragile nature of freedom in this International Booker Prize 2020 nominee.
