A thinner, more expensive iPhone could join Apple’s lineup

Looking to the future: Apple is reportedly working on a thinner iPhone to replace the Plus model in the iPhone 17 lineup. The price is also said to exceed that of the iPhone Pro Max. This is also not an improved version of the iPhone 16, but represents an iPhone X-level design leap forward. Meanwhile, the world is waiting for the iPhone 16, which is said to be all about AI-oriented features.

Apple is working on making the iPhone thinner, according to a report from The Information, citing three people with direct knowledge of the project. The new phone is expected to launch in September 2025 and will start at $1,200, potentially costing more than Apple’s most expensive model to date, the iPhone Pro Max.

The thin device could replace the Plus model as part of the iPhone 17 lineup, but the format hasn’t met Apple’s expectations. However, the iPhone 16 phone lineup, including the iPhone 16 Plus, is still available.

The design has been compared to an iPhone X-level leap forward with a completely new aesthetic. Apple is considering several options for new devices, including an aluminum chassis. A small pill-shaped notch houses the front camera along with a Face ID sensor, while the rear camera array may be moved to the center of the handset. Finally, the screen size is said to be between 6.12 and 6.669 inches, or between the current base iPhone and iPhone Pro Max.

It’s unclear exactly how thin it will be, but the device will likely follow in the footsteps of the recently launched new iPad Pro, Apple’s thinnest product yet. The 11-inch model is 5.3mm thin, and the 13-inch model is even thinner at 5.1mm.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 is scheduled to be released in about five months. It is expected to focus on AI advancements with few changes to the physical design. One change, however, may be that the physical buttons on each side of the iPhone will be replaced with solid-state capacitive versions that simulate button presses. Sources familiar with the matter told the Economic Daily that a supplier called Advanced Semiconductor Engineering recently installed a system-in-a-package (SIP) module for use in conjunction with a pair of Taptic Engine motors. It is said that they have signed a contract to provide Apple with the following information: Touch-enabled “button”.

However, it is unlikely that the iPhone 16 will be fully touch-enabled, and it is widely expected that the design will follow the iPhone 15.

Another possible change is the introduction of an all-new flagship model this year called the iPhone Ultra, which sits above the Pro Max, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Garman.
