MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Nancy Binay has expressed her willingness to run for next year’s Makati mayoral election, even if it means running against the husband of her sister and outgoing Mayor Abby Binay.
Sen. Binay said yesterday that he is “seriously considering” his decision to run for the mayor’s office after completing his second term in the Senate.
Since being promoted to the Senate in 2013, Binay, who has described himself as running for politics “by accident,” said he has learned to embrace the obligations of public service and hopes to move beyond his family’s turf.
However, amid reports that Congressman Luis Campos is eyeing the mayoral race, family feuds are influencing her decision to run for mayor.
“It is my wish as the eldest son to resolve this dispute in our family,” Binay said, adding that it should be about “our father’s legacy that we want to inherit,” adding that the former vice president he added, referring to Jejomar Binay. He served as the mayor of Makati for many years.
Although Abby’s husband Campos is not technically a Binay believer, it will still be a political showdown for Makati, reflecting the internal rifts within the Binay family.
“I have always thought that deciding to run would mean sacrificing my relationship with (my) in-laws. But for the sake of the people of Makati, we have to sacrifice it. No,” Binay said.
Politics aside, “at the end of the day, we’re still a family,” the senator said.
“I still have not lost hope that our family will not be dragged into another conflict. is also very likely to occur,” she added.
The rift in the Binay family began in 2019 with a political showdown between brothers Abby and Junjun Binay over a post in Makati City Hall.
Abby, who is in the midst of his third and final term as Makati mayor, is deciding whether to run for Taguig mayor after the Supreme Court granted jurisdiction over 10 enlisted barrios or “embos.” He said in January that he would decide by January. The 2021 ruling transferred the Makati barangay to Taguig and confirmed it in 2023.
