Kentucky finalists selected for Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education – Kentucky Teachers

Graphic shows photos of Kentucky PAEMST Award finalists: Emily Lehman, Rhoda Whitaker, Jennifer McCafferty, Christina Morris(FRANKFORT, KY) – Four Kentucky educators have been named state finalists for the President’s Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education, the nation’s highest honor for K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics. I have qualified to receive the award (PAEMST). and computer science teachers.

Each year, a national committee of distinguished mathematicians, scientists, mathematics and science education researchers, district-level officials, and classroom teachers nominate up to 108 teachers to receive PAEMST awards. This award will be presented to up to two math and/or science teachers from each state, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. territories, and schools operated by Department of Defense Educational Operations in the U.S. and abroad.

Teachers selected as PAEMST award recipients will receive a trip to Washington, D.C., where they will participate in a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities. They will also receive her $10,000 award from NSF, a presidential certificate, and join an elite group of award-winning teachers who can impact STEM education in their state/jurisdiction and across the nation.

A state selection committee comprised of prominent mathematics or science education advisors, district-level officials, and/or classroom teachers reviewed Kentucky’s applications. These applications were evaluated using review criteria and scoring information provided by the National Science Foundation.

The final candidates are:

2024 Mathematics Division Finalist

  • Emily Lehman, WR McNeil Elementary School (Bowling Green);
  • Rhoda Whitaker, North Washington Elementary School (Washington County).

2024 Science Finalist

  • Jennifer McCafferty, North Callaway Elementary School (Callaway County).
  • Christina Morris, Crofton Elementary School (Christian County).

Lehman was also recently recognized as the recipient of the Kentucky Board of Education’s 2024 Robinson Award for Diversity and Equity in Public Education.

This awards program is administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
