If you’re just joining us, here’s what you need to know about how this incident unfolded this morning.

Donald Trump appeared outside court and slammed the case, saying he should campaign in Pennsylvania instead.

When jury selection resumed for the second day, the former president took a seat among his lawyers. The former president was often seen leaning back in his chair and flipping through jury questionnaires while jurors spoke.

At least eight potential jurors were excused throughout the morning. Here’s why:

  • One person said it would be “probably difficult” to be fair. He acknowledged that he is from Texas and has many friends who are Republicans.
  • Several potential jurors said they did not believe they could be fair and impartial, including a woman who said she had subscribed to an anti-Trump newsletter at one time. Ta.
  • Some expressed concern about the strain on jury duty.

Eighteen potential jurors passed the cross-examination stage by the district attorney’s office and Trump’s lawyers.

Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass asked potential jurors whether they thought it was possible not to question witnesses to “unrealistic standards.” Todd Blanche, Trump’s lawyer, said this is a different case than any other and he will test whether potential jurors can be fair and impartial.

Mr. Trump was asked to leave the room and his team said they needed more time to discuss the former president’s removal from the jury.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said that apart from jury selection, President Trump’s social media posts violated a gag order imposed by Judge Juan Machan. Prosecutors are asking the court to fine Trump $1,000 for each violation. Marchand scheduled a hearing on the district attorney’s motion for April 23 at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Court will resume at 2:15 p.m. ET.

What’s next? Machan said lawyers on both sides will launch peremptory attacks on potential jurors they don’t think will help their case. Both teams have 10 strikes that can be used throughout the jury selection process. After those jurors were excused, the judge said the case would proceed to the six jurors in the group who had not been questioned. After questioning, Marchan said he would like to convene a second panel of potential jurors today.
