VGChartz methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and national trends, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This allows you to generate numbers that are typically within 10% of the actual total.
This data is regularly compared to official shipment numbers published by console manufacturers and estimates from regional trackers with better market coverage than we do. It then updates its own estimates to match those numbers. As a result, changes may occur frequently over a short period of time, but we believe it is important to prioritize accuracy over consistency.
Please note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (quantity sold to consumers). In most cases, the numbers released by console manufacturers are based on shipping data (sell-in), and a sale is considered once the device leaves the factory and enters the supply chain for delivery. This is why, even after adjustment, there is always a discrepancy between a company’s numbers (sell-in) and VGChartz’s estimates (sell-through). The only exception is if the console is discontinued and the remaining stock is eventually sold out. At that point the numbers will match.
