Former Bears medal at World Rowing Cup I

Varese (Italy) – Former California men’s rowers Olaf Molenaar (’22) and Joachim Sutton (’19) won medals at the World Rowing Cup I in Varese, Italy, last weekend. Molenaar helped the Netherlands win silver in the men’s 8th division, while Sutton helped Denmark win bronze in the men’s pairs. Current rowers Frederic Breuer, Gennaro Di Mauro and Tim Roth also competed in the event.
Molenaar’s team won the opening round with a time of 5 minutes 32.48 seconds and qualified for the A final, while the Netherlands came in second place with a time of 5 minutes 29.83 seconds, just two seconds behind the British in first place.
Sutton and his team took second place in the opening heat with a time of 6:31.92 and first place in the repechage round, earning them one of the two remaining spots in the A final, with Denmark third in 6:21.85. That left him with a difference of 2 seconds. Second place.
Breuer represented Germany in the men’s fourth division. His team placed second in the opening heat with a time of 5:58.01 and advanced to the A final, but just missed out on the podium, finishing fourth with a time of 5:50.35. He was less than a second behind the Dutch in third place.
DiMauro represented Italy in the men’s single sculls, finishing second in the opening heat and advancing to the quarterfinals. He finished fourth in that round, missing out on qualifying for the A/B finals by less than a second. He won the C final with a time of 7:00.26.
Ross represented Switzerland in the men’s fourth division. His team won the opening heat and qualified for the A final. In the final, his team finished in fifth place with a time of 5:50.45, just one-tenth of a second behind Breuer and Germany.
World Boating Cup II will be held in Lucerne, Switzerland from May 24th to 26th.
