Denver International Airport was ranked the sixth-busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic in 2023 and the third-busiest airport in the United States by Airports Council International.
According to 2023 data released Monday, 77.8 million passengers will fly to, from and through Denver, an increase of 12.3% compared to 2022 totals and the airport’s annual passenger volume of more than 70 million. This is the first time I have recorded it.
The airport’s busiest year for pre-pandemic traffic was 2019, making DIA the 16th busiest airport in the world. DIA was one of the fastest-recovering airports after the COVID-19 pandemic minimized air travel in 2020, according to the council’s 2022 data. It rose to third place in global passenger numbers in 2021 and 2022, despite significant declines in air travel in Asia and Europe.
International airport hubs such as London’s Heathrow Airport rejoined the ranks of the top 10 busiest airports in 2022. Dubai, London, Tokyo and Dallas airports will surpass Denver in 2023, with Atlanta taking the top spot.
Although DIA fell three spots in the world rankings, the airport is still rated as the third busiest airport in the United States and fourth in the world by number of aircraft operations.
DIA’s passenger numbers will continue to grow and could exceed 100 million passengers per year by 2030, according to previous projections by airport consultants.
The airport is implementing its “Vision 100” strategic plan to accommodate expected annual passenger growth. A new 17-lane security checkpoint has already been built and a new airline, Breeze Airways, has announced the launch of nonstop flights to Rhode Island in 2024. Earlier this month, DIA also announced Turkish Airlines’ new nonstop service from Denver to Istanbul.
