Similar to the United States, European countries are calling for restraint following Iran’s recent attack on Israel over the weekend.

The United States, Europe and Russia have called for restraint following Iran’s missile and drone attacks on Israel over the weekend.

Israel’s European allies on Monday called on Israel to show restraint and avoid escalation in the Middle East, Reuters reported.

President Joe Biden has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the United States will not participate in Israel’s counterattack against Iran, U.S. officials said.

Pope calls for all efforts towards dialogue and peace in the Middle East

At the conclusion of Sunday’s Regina Cerri, Pope Francis made a heartfelt appeal for an end to the spiral of violence in the Middle East and for all countries to support negotiations.

Following the attack, Pope Francis on Sunday expressed concern that the cycle of violence could worsen further, saying that no one should threaten the existence of another and that instead all countries should “stand on the side of peace. ”, he emphasized.

Considering reply

The Israeli prime minister’s war cabinet, which has the power to decide the country’s response, was scheduled to convene Monday afternoon, government officials said.

Israeli officials said the war cabinet, which also met on Sunday, supported retaliation but differed on the timing and scale of such a response.

Europe and America call for restraint

Meanwhile, foreign policy chiefs from Britain, France, Germany and the European Union have joined the US government and UN Secretary-General António Guterres in calling for restraint as tensions and fear rise.

Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, told a Spanish radio station: “We are on the edge of a cliff and we have to move away from it.” “You have to hit the brakes and reverse gear,” he said.

Similarly, French President Emmanuel Macron urged Israel to set its sights on isolating Iran rather than escalating the situation.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also warned Iran against further attacks and said Israel must also help ease tensions.

Kremlin: ‘Further escalation is in no one’s interest’

Russia has refrained from publicly criticizing its ally Iran over the attack, but on Monday expressed concern about the risk of escalation and called for restraint.

“Further escalation is not in anyone’s interest,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
