With the new Authentication Settings in Google Wallet for Android, you can now choose whether you need to verify your identity when using payment methods and passes in your wallet.

Updated on 4/15: Over the past few days, validation settings have been widely rolled out. A new card may appear in your path list explaining the new option.

This transit change will require Google Wallet to roll out common tap-to-pay authentication more frequently and widely. If you try to open or use your wallet three minutes after unlocking your phone, Google will ask you to re-authenticate. This takes the form of a “verify your identity” prompt that appears at the top of the card carousel.

Choose whether you need to verify your identity when using items stored in your wallet. Verify using your device’s lock settings, such as your fingerprint or her PIN.

Original 3/25: Open Google Wallet, tap your profile picture, select Wallet Settings, and find the new “Security” heading. The authentication settings page currently displays the “Transportation Payments” home. “Authentication before paying for buses, subways, etc. with a credit or debit card.”

Google describes how “readers first look for transit cards” as “no authentication required.” If you don’t have any, “your credit or debit card may be charged.”

There is an option to disable the “Require confirmation” toggle, which is on by default. “If Required Verification is turned off, you won’t have to verify your identity before paying for transportation with your default credit or debit card, even if your phone is turned on.” Locked. All other payments will continue to be authorized with this card. ” This could significantly speed up public transport transactions.

While Google Play Services version 24.08.12 has confirmed authentication settings, Google Wallet 24.10.x was also widely rolled out today.

This addition follows reports that Google Wallet in some countries now requires devices to be unlocked for tap-to-pay (store) transactions, regardless of amount.
