First off, there’s a lot of drama going on at NESCAC, and we’ll cover it in superlatives. But let’s actually talk about how Swarthmore ended up in the top five.
Yes, Swarthmore is a not-so-small team that beat Dickinson 12-11 and can actually take down the real Goliath. Moreover, the mythical Von Mavs contributed only his one goal to this cause.
Thanks to their win over Union, RPI continues to be on the court as the team to beat in the Liberty League. With this win, Engineer’s undefeated streak increased to 13.
RPI and Salisbury, the last two teams to remain undefeated, are two of only three undefeated teams in all divisions in NCAA men’s lacrosse. Luke Murphy had a great season scoring six goals in a 16-12 win over Union. He turns 47 this year. Even with RPI’s incredible performance throughout the year, he is far from at the top of the table in the league. The top three teams in the Liberty League have a total of two losses.
The Saints fell from grace, not by flying too close to the sun, but by entering the lush jungles of Vermont without a hatchet drawn. Despite moving up in the NESCAC standings, the Middlebury Panthers are still a dangerous team, and St. Lawrence proved that on Tuesday, losing their first game of the season 13-7.
The usual suspects are still in play, including last year’s triumvirate of Salisbury, RIT, and Tufts, all of whom are back to winning ways.
There is light at the end of the tunnel for Division III teams still finding their way to their respective conference tournaments. A solid schedule might get you a ticket to the dance, but winning the conference will definitely get you past the bouncers.
