Here’s how to enable your phone to connect to satellites on Android 15

summary

  • Google plans to introduce satellite connectivity with a new UI on Pixel 9 running Android 15 to improve emergency services.
  • Users will be able to use their phone’s tilt and side-to-side movements to center the satellite and stay connected even in zones with no network.
  • Android’s satellite pointing UI improves safety by notifying emergency contacts, answering questions, and getting help faster.

Apple introduced satellite connectivity with the launch of iPhone 14 in 2022. Despite Qualcomm’s efforts, satellite connectivity has not yet become mainstream in the Android ecosystem. So far, the best smartphones released this year have missed this feature. Multiple signs indicate that Google will work with his T-Mobile to integrate satellite connectivity into Android 15 with a twist. Additionally, the Pixel 9 series will be able to use the new Exynos modem to communicate with satellites. A new leak reveals his Android satellite pointing UI, likely part of Android 15, and shows how the feature will work.

The Pixel 9 series is Google’s biggest mobile refresh since Tensor — here’s what we expect

It is important to have a clear view of the sky in order to connect your phone to the satellite. Google will help with this and provide detailed instructions as shown in the video below. @Nail_Sadykov On the Google News Telegram channel. This UI is believed to appear on his Pixel 9 running Android 15 when he triggers emergency services in a zone with no network.

As the video shows, Google provides detailed instructions and asks you to tilt or move your phone from side to side to connect to the satellite. The setup window can be turned into a floating window, allowing you to stay in touch with emergency services as you improve your phone’s satellite coverage.

Satellite connection notification with details

As detailed previously, you also have the option to notify your emergency contacts that you need help before the satellite UI appears. After this, you will have to answer predefined questions, and the information will probably be transferred to emergency services so that the relevant help arrives faster. This is in contrast to how this feature works on the iPhone, where the only option is to contact emergency services.

Presumably, the satellite pointing UI will only be available on next-generation Pixel devices like the Pixel 9 and Pixel Fold 2. These devices will reportedly ship with the new Exynos 5400 modem, which features support for 5G non-terrestrial networks.

Satellite connectivity on Android will become official in late October to coincide with the release of Android 15 and the Pixel 9 series. However, given the complex relationship, expect this feature to initially roll out only in the US.
