Canada defeats USA to win world ice hockey title; Serdachny clinches championship | National news

Daniel Serdachny scored the winning goal in overtime to give Canada a 6-5 victory over the United States at the Women’s Ice Hockey World Championship in Utica, New York on Sunday.

Serdačny’s power-play goal 5 minutes, 16 seconds into overtime helped Canada regain the world title from the United States, which won the gold medal in Canada last year.

She grabbed the rebound after teammate Erin Ambrose’s shot was deflected by U.S. goaltender Erin Frankel. Frankel made 25 saves.

Canada’s captain, Marie-Philippe Poulain, scored twice, her first goal of the tournament.

Emily Clarke, Ambrose and Julia Gosling also scored for Canada, and goaltender Anne-Reny Desbiances made 19 saves.

Laila Edwards, Megan Keller, Caroline Harvey, Hilary Knight and Alex Carpenter scored for the United States.

Canada and the United States met in the finals for the 22nd time in 23 tournaments, and the game ended in a 5-5 tie at Adirondack Bank Center after a fierce back-and-forth third period.

Ambrose’s pass hit Harvey’s stick and was deflected into the net, giving Canada the lead.

Edwards, who had a hat trick in the semifinal win over Finland, brought the U.S. into the tie, but Canada regained the lead early in the second period when Gosling fired a shot past Frankel.

Keller scored the tying goal past Desbiens and Carpenter put the Americans ahead, but Poulin countered with a wrist shot to tie the score at 3-3 late in the second period.

The U.S. regained the lead midway through the third inning when Harvey’s shot hit the top of the boards and Knight grabbed the rebound.

Canada tied the game again less than two minutes later on a goal by Clark, then Poulin’s second goal (a nifty shot that went over Frankel’s pads) led to his third with 7:41 left at 5-4. And so.

With just over five minutes remaining, Lacey Eden passed the puck from behind the net to Harvey, who slotted it past Desbiens to make it 5-5 and set the stage for Serdachny’s golden goal heroics.

Finland defeated the Czech Republic 3-2, with Petra Nieminen winning the penalty shootout, and took home the bronze medal.
