Scientists mourn the death of National Center for Cell Science Director Dr Mohan Wani | Pune News

The death of Dr Mohan Wani (59), director of the National Center for Cell Science, Pune, on Sunday shocked the scientific community.

“Dr. Mohan will always be remembered as a smiling, simple, down-to-earth and above all a brilliant scientist and human being who rose through the ranks to reach the top of a prestigious institution. According to Dr. Shekhar Mande, former Director-General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr. Mohan Wani was one of the best cell biologists in the country.

“He originally trained as a veterinarian, and that training helped him address the critical problems of modern biomedicine through the tools of cell biology. He joined NCCS at an early stage and his contributions in bone regeneration are highly recognized by his peers around the world,” said Dr. Mande. “As director of NCCS in Pune, he brought new energy to the institute and worked tirelessly to foster collaboration between clinicians and basic biomedical scientists. His ever-smiling personality and gentle demeanor made him a He became a great friend to those around him.”

Dr. Mande further said that Dr. Wani will be missed by all.

“He was a very good scientist. The news of his death is very sad,” said Dr GC Mishra, former director of NCCS.

Dr. Wani was appointed as Director of NCCS, a major research institute under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, in 2022. He completed his Master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from Nagpur Veterinary College. He then completed his PhD in Human Medicine at St George’s Hospital, University of London. He was also a Fellow of prestigious scientific academies such as the Indian National Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Veterinary Medicine, and the National Academy of Medical Sciences.

His research work has been published in several high-impact international journals, and he has mentored numerous PhDs, medical students, veterinary students, and postdoctoral fellows. He received several prestigious awards including Commonwealth Fellowship, BM Birla Science Award, and National Biological Sciences Award.

NCCS conducts cutting-edge research in a variety of fields, including cell biology, cancer biology, infectious diseases and immunology, stem cells and regenerative medicine, structural biology, and bioinformatics.

Dr. Wani has contributed important research to understanding the control of the cellular and molecular pathophysiology of important skeletal and autoimmune diseases such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. His group also contributes to stem cell biology and regenerative medicine.
