TCL releases awkward trailer for AI-generated movie

What you need to know

  • TCL is releasing an AI-generated movie, “Next Stop Paris,” and its trailer has been released on YouTube.
  • The short film features an original script and human voice actors, but uses generative artificial intelligence for animation.
  • Next Stop Paris will appear on TCLtv+, the free streaming service provided by TCL, marking the company’s first foray into original content.

TCL is a company known for its low-cost Android TVs and low-cost Android smartphones, but it’s now also creating original content. New content will appear on the free streaming service TCLtv+, and first he will release one short film. However, these are more than just movies. His newly formed TCLtv+ studio plans to produce animated films using generative artificial intelligence.

Generative AI is used in many mainstream applications such as text generation, image generation, and even custom animation. However, the technology is still maturing, and major companies have yet to leverage AI for long-form video animation. That changes with Next Stop Paris, which TCL calls an “AI-generated special.” This is a short romance film written by a human author and voice actor, with contributions from human artists as well. However, most of the animation is handled by artificial intelligence.

As far as the Next Stop Paris trailer suggests, TCL hasn’t made much progress in generative AI animation. It looks as if the company used his AI image generator to create a still image and add movement to it. It’s clear that this trailer was made with artificial intelligence, especially since there are abnormalities seen on the characters’ faces. The audio track also doesn’t seem to perfectly match the lip movements, creating a viewing experience that can only be described as awkward.

You can see for yourself what TCL’s animated romance film will be like through the trailer on YouTube.

Again, this isn’t as bad as past examples of AI animation. You may remember the viral video of Will Smith eating spaghetti, and it certainly wasn’t a good one. Those at the helm of TCL want to push the boundaries of this AI-generated film and see if audiences will enjoy it. Although not explicitly stated, there are clear cost benefits for TCL to create original AI-powered content rather than using human animators or live-action formats.

“Stories are at the heart of everything we do,” said Chris Regina, chief content officer at TCL. “We help creators and storytellers use this new technology to enrich the human experience, and we believe that creatives with limitless imagination drive limitless innovation. We see “Next Stop Paris” as an early experiment, and we look forward to seeing the results.”How will it be received in the town square? ”

TCL says Next Stop Paris will be released this summer both online and on the TCLtv+ app.
