The iPhone 16 series, especially the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, could rank among the best camera phones. As is usually the case with Apple’s high-end phones, that much is predictable. But thanks to leaks and rumors, we can also predict what the actual camera hardware will be like.
Below you’ll find details on the most likely camera specs for each of the four expected iPhone 16 models.
This is primarily based on leaks and includes some educated guesses. So these specs haven’t been confirmed yet – and likely won’t be until the iPhone 16 series is announced in September – but these are our best guesses at this point. .
iPhone 16 camera prediction
iPhone 16 camera specs (rumor) | |
---|---|
Main camera: | 48MP, f/1.6, 1/1.56 inch |
Ultra wide angle camera: | 12MP, f/2.4 (120 degree viewing angle) |
Telephoto camera: | Not applicable |
Front camera: | 12MP, f/1.9, 1/3.6 inch |
Unfortunately, no major upgrades are expected to the iPhone 16’s camera. According to a leaker, the iPhone 16 will have the same 12MP f/2.4 ultra-wide-angle camera as its predecessor, but will once again only have a dual-lens camera. If it has an ultra-wide-angle camera, you can expect a 120-degree field of view. They also added that it lacks the autofocus and macro modes offered by the Pro model.
Various leaked images only show the iPhone 16 with a dual-lens camera, so it seems highly unlikely that Apple will add a third lens.
Therefore, a dedicated telephoto lens probably won’t exist. We haven’t heard much about the main sensor, but we expect it to be the same 48MP f/1.6 one as the iPhone 15 since it’s an upgraded one. It’s already unlikely that Apple will give any further upgrades to its camera last year.
However, one change we can see is the lens layout, with leaked images suggesting that the iPhone 16 will have lenses arranged vertically rather than diagonally. It is speculated that this will allow spatial video recording, which will then be available for viewing on Apple. Vision Pro.
As for the front camera, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (who has a good track record with Apple information), this remains the same, meaning we can probably expect a 12MP f/1.9 snapper like last year. To do. Considering that even the iPhone 15 Pro Max only has a selfie camera with that spec, it’s unlikely that the iPhone 16 will get an upgrade here.
iPhone 16 Plus camera prediction
iPhone 16 Plus camera specs (rumor) | |
---|---|
Main camera: | 48MP, f/1.6, 1/1.56 inch |
Ultra wide angle camera: | 12MP, f/2.4 (120 degree viewing angle) |
Telephoto camera: | Not applicable |
Front camera: | 12MP, f/1.9, 1/3.6 inch |
We haven’t heard much specifically about the iPhone 16 Plus’ camera, but based on past formats, it will likely be the same as the standard iPhone 16’s camera.
You can read the detailed predictions above, but in short, it is likely to feature a dual-lens rear camera with a 48MP f/1.6 main sensor and a 12MP f/2.4 ultrawide (120-degree viewing angle). view). We also hear that these have the same specs as the iPhone 15 Plus and will inherit the same 12MP f/1.9 selfie snapper.
The only rumored change is that the lens layout is now horizontal instead of diagonal, which could allow the iPhone 16 Plus to record spatial video for use with Apple Vision Pro.
iPhone 16 Pro camera prediction
iPhone 16 Pro camera specs (rumor) | |
---|---|
Main camera: | 48MP, f/1.8, 1/1.14 inch |
Ultra wide angle camera: | 48MP, 1/2.6 inch |
Telephoto camera: | 12MP, f/2.8, 1/3.06 inch, 120mm (5x optical zoom) |
Front camera: | 12MP, f/1.9, 1/3.6 inch |
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus probably won’t have a big camera upgrade, but the iPhone 16 Pro might.
The main upgrade here might be a 12MP f/2.8 periscope camera with 5x optical zoom instead of the 3x telephoto camera on the iPhone 15 Pro. This new sensor is the one already seen on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and multiple leaks have pointed out that the iPhone 16 Pro will have this periscope camera, so it’s likely. It seems.
Another rumored upgrade is the iPhone 16 Pro’s ultra-wide-angle camera, which could go from 12MP on the iPhone 15 Pro to 48MP this year, and possibly include a larger 1/2.6-inch sensor.
We’ve also heard that the iPhone 16 Pro may feature a stacked camera design, which could improve low-light performance, but it’s not clear which lenses will benefit from that.
We haven’t heard much about the main camera yet, so for now we’re predicting it to be pretty much the same as last year, namely a 48MP f/1.8 main sensor. However, leaker Digital Chat Station claims that while the megapixel count remains the same, the sensor size could be at least slightly larger, from 1/1.28 inch to 1/1.14 inch.
Meanwhile, the front camera is apparently the same as last year’s, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (post linked above).
iPhone 16 Pro Max camera prediction
iPhone 16 Pro Max camera specs (rumor) | |
---|---|
Main camera: | 48MP, f/1.8, 1/1.14 inch |
Ultra wide angle camera: | 48MP, 1/2.6 inch |
Telephoto camera: | 300mm super telephoto |
Front camera: | 12MP, f/1.9, 1/3.6 inch |
The iPhone 16 Pro’s camera upgrade is impressive, but the iPhone 16 Pro Max could top that as some sources mention the possibility of the iPhone 16 Pro Max getting a “super telephoto” camera. There is a possibility. 300mm or more. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 5x optical zoom is only 120mm.
However, this leak is something we haven’t heard in a while, so I’d like to take this leak with a grain of salt. There was also some debate as to whether this upgrade was planned for the iPhone 16 Pro Max or the rumored iPhone Ultra.
If the iPhone 16 Pro Max doesn’t receive this telephoto upgrade, it will likely continue using the previous generation’s 12MP, f/2.8, 5x zoom camera.
Other cameras are also expected to match the iPhone 16 Pro, and based on leaks (see details above), that could mean a 48MP ultra-wide camera (up from 12MP on the iPhone 15 Pro Max). There is improved low-light performance for some or all lenses.
However, we don’t expect any major upgrades to the main or front-facing cameras at this time, other than perhaps improved low-light performance and a larger sensor size for the main camera. That means the return of the 48MP f/1.8 main sensor. 12MP f/1.9 selfie camera.
