116 projects from Kindergarten to Grade 12 students from Fraser Valley schools are on display
The best science fair projects by Fraser Valley students were on display at the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair held at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) on Thursday, April 11.
Students from Langley, Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack and Hope participated in classes, groups or as individuals.
A total of 116 projects were presented to both the public and the jury and were eligible to win cash prizes and prizes.
Students in grades 7 to 12 have the chance to represent Team BC at the all-expenses-paid Canada Wide Science Fair in Ottawa.
“I am very excited to be here,” said Avneet Singh Sandhu, a fifth-year student at Dasmesh Punjab School. “I’ve been waiting for this day.”
Sandhu has conducted projects on photosynthesis in plants, with topics ranging from global warming to mental health and even 3D printing.
At Dasmesh Punjab School in Abbotsford, the first round was held in class.
Initially, five projects were selected from each class, which was then narrowed down to three. These three were presented at the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair.
“I didn’t expect to make it past the first round,” said fourth-year student Gulnihar Singh Bains.
The event aims to spark imagination and love for science, and that’s exactly what happened to Year 8 students Japandeep Gill and Mehtab Kangra.
Kangra was preparing to leave for a flight at Vancouver International Airport when her family couldn’t find a parking spot. Unfortunately, his family missed the flight.
This upsetting situation inspired Khangura to create a sensor that drivers could attach to their cars and connect to robotic sensors on parking poles. This not only allows drivers to find a place to stall in a crowded parking lot, but also makes it easier to find their vehicle when they return.
Gil and Kangra were excited to share their project, saying, “We want to go to the national competition!”
The two, along with other young scientists, will find out how they achieved at the awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 17th.
